We asked. You answered.

Earlier in our email series, we put a simple question to the Construction Back Office New England community: which AI-assisted back-office topics do you most want to learn about, and see demonstrated? We gave you a list of common construction back-office pain points and asked you to click the ones that mattered, in priority order.

The results were clear — and honestly, not surprising once you’ve talked to enough contractors doing public works.

The Results: What You Prioritized

Watch the full survey results breakdown below:

The ranked priority order from your responses:

  1. Certified Payroll & Union Reporting — by a wide margin, the #1 requested topic
  2. Invoices, Progress Billing & Payroll/Accounting Integration
  3. Cashflow Management
  4. Safety Reports & Incident Tracking
  5. Change Order Processing Automation
  6. Analytics & Business Insights for Executives
  7. RFIs & Submittals Workflows
  8. Bidding, Estimating & Software Integrations
  9. Executive Management AI Mandate & Roadmap Strategy

Why Certified Payroll Came Out on Top

If you’re doing any public works, prevailing wage, or federally funded construction, you already know why. Certified payroll is:

  • Mandatory — no certified payroll, no payment
  • Complex — different wage determinations per jurisdiction, fringe benefit calculations, multi-trade classifications
  • Time-consuming — WH-347 preparation and filing can consume 12–15 hours of back-office staff time per week on a typical multi-project portfolio
  • Unforgiving — errors mean resubmission at best, debarment notices at worst

It’s the pain point that combines all the worst qualities: high stakes, high volume, high complexity, and zero tolerance for mistakes. Of course it came out on top.

A Note on Data Security Before You Go Further

Before we dive into AI solutions for any of these topics, there’s something important to address — one we’ll cover in detail in the next post.

If you’re already using AI in your business — ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini — on a low-cost consumer account, you need to understand what’s happening to your data. Your project details, client information, payroll numbers, and financial data are among the most sensitive business information you have. Not all AI platforms handle that data the same way.

In the next post, we’ll break down exactly what the differences are, what “enterprise-grade” data protection actually means, and what a secure AI setup looks like for a construction business.

Then, in the posts that follow, we’ll get to what you actually asked for — starting with Certified Payroll & Union Reporting.
